چکیده
This paper examines the variables inherent in the shape-changing phenomenon and suggests a new method of experimenting with shape memory alloys (SMA) to direct kinesis. This method widens the range of potential interactive applications beyond the traditional “on-off” state. The resulting flexibility permits personalization throughout the course of the transformation, enhancing the use of the material as infrastructure or for interface for pervasive computer systems or mechanical devices.

Design of a Kalman filter for rotary shape memory alloy actuators
Measuring the state variables of systems actuated by shape memory alloys (SMAs) is normally a difficult task because of the small diameter of the SMA wires. In such cases, as an alternative, observers are used to estimate the state vector. This paper presents an extended Kalman filter (EKF) for estimation of the state variables of a single-degree-of-freedom rotary manipulator actuated by an SMA...
متن کاملMovement sequence-related activity reflecting numerical order of components in supplementary and presupplementary motor areas.
The supplementary motor area (SMA) and presupplementary motor areas (pre-SMA) have been implicated in movement sequencing, and neurons in SMA have been shown to encode what might be termed the relational order among sequence components (e.g., movement X followed by movement Y). To determine whether other aspects of movement sequencing might also be encoded by SMA or pre-SMA neurons, we analyzed...
متن کاملModeling of Thin Layer Extensional Thermoelectric Sma Actuators
As a rst step towards the design of a high frequency, high force, large strain shape memory alloy(SMA) actuator, we model in this work a thermoelectrically cooled thin SMA layer linear actuator. The SMA is subjected to cyclic phase transition between the martensitic and austenitic phases by alternate heating/cooling, achieved with the thermoelectric Peltier e ect of a pair of P/N semiconductors...
متن کاملA scalable moment-closure approximation for large-scale biochemical reaction networks
Motivation Stochastic molecular processes are a leading cause of cell-to-cell variability. Their dynamics are often described by continuous-time discrete-state Markov chains and simulated using stochastic simulation algorithms. As these stochastic simulations are computationally demanding, ordinary differential equation models for the dynamics of the statistical moments have been developed. The...
